*Xanadu, Zanadu o Shangdu era la capital de verano del Imperio Mongol de Kublai Khan, el cual ocupaba gran parte de Asia. Hallazgos arqueológicos concluyen que la estaba situada en la actual provinvia de Mongolia Interior, en China. La ciudad consistía en tres bloques: la Ciudad Exterior , la Ciudad Interior y el Palacio, donde Kublai Khan permanecía en verano. Se cree que el Palacio de Xanadu era de la mitad del tamaño de la Ciudad Prohibida, en Beijing. Los khanes mongoles hicieron muy pocos cambios a su país, tomando mucho de las filosofías Confusionistas y Taoístas, y remodelando su gobierno en las dinastías nativas que derrotaban. De cualquier modo, ellos abrieron el imperio a los viajeros occidentales, permitiendo a viajeros como el explorador veneciano Marco Polo reportar las maravillas de oriente a los europeos. Xanadu se ha convertido en una metáfora para la opulencia, gracias a la ríqueza de esta ciudad en tiempos del Imperio Mongol.
